91’s Center for the Future Mind will host Mindfest 2023, a conference that will explore the future of artificial intelligence, on Thursday, March 16 and Friday, March 17 on 91’s Boca Raton campus at 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton.

The conference marks the grand opening of 91’s Center for the Future Mind. Under the direction of Susan Schneider, Ph.D., the William F. Dietrich Distinguished Professor at 91, former NASA chair and Distinguished Scholar at the Library of Congress, the Center is based within 91’s Brain Institute, as well as the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. Experts in the field at each session will take questions about topics such as how much is known when a chatbot is conscious and what is consciousness.

Conference sessions include:

  • “The Parable of the Elephant: How Indian Philosophy Illuminates the Study of Consciousness,” a keynote with Anand Vaidya, Ph.D., from San Jose State University  
  • “Conscious Experience in Nonlinguistic Entities. What is it Like to be a Newborn? An Octopus? An AI?,” a panel discussion with Claudia Passos, Ph.D., New York University; Garrett Mindt, Ph.D., 91; Carlos Montemayor, Ph.D., San Francisco State University; and David Chalmers, Ph.D., NYU.
  • “Three Viable Paths to True AGI,” a keynote with Ben Goertzel, Ph.D., SingularityNet
  • “ Reality Plus: Virtual Worlds and the Problems of Philosophy,” with David Chalmers, Ph.D.
